All About the Background

The "Tree of Life with Celtic Ornamentation" (26" x 26" stained glass panel) is the latest custom design from Smash Glassworks.  It's an example of how sometimes the background elements of the piece do the work, while the focal points remain in silhouette.

In the initial stages, the tree and Celtic ornament components are cut from a grey cathedral glass with a subtle woodgrain texture.  This sets the stage with the silhouette.

Next comes the drama.  The inner circle background elements are cut from a semi-opaque glass blended with greens, ambers, and yellows. The individual pieces are cut on the horizontal grain of the glass to produce a landscape/horizon effect.

Next, the remaining background components are cut from several single-tone glass pieces, matched to the colours found in the landscape/horizon glass elements.

Finally, the solder joints are finished with a dark grey patina to complement the grey silhouette glass.  In the case of the solder joints pertaining to the tree section, the choice of patina has the added effect of appearing as an extension of the tree branch and root systems.
